Harvard Columbus Expedition scrapbook, 1937-1940.

Scrapbook kept by Mary Otis Stevens containing letters, photographs and clippings documenting her nephew William Dixon Stevens' participation in the Harvard Columbus Expedition, 1937-40, a sailing expedition sponsored by Harvard University to follow Christopher Columbus' route from Spain to the New World. Letters from William describe his voyage on the ketch Mary Otis, and places visited in England, Portugal, Spain, Trinidad and Tobago and other ports. The scrapbook also contains a few letters from Samuel Eliot Morison who led the expedition; and letters from the Fahnestock South Sea Expedition to Mary Otis Stevens describing exploration in the South Seas in 1940. The photographs in the scrapbook are all snapshot photographs, probably taken by William Dixon Stevens, of the crew of the Mary Otis and the ship itself.
